The Cathedral Choir is a non-auditioned group of singers who meet on Wednesday evenings year round with a 3 week break in July. We are presently rehearsing from 6:15 pm-7:45 pm. Currently the choir has over 85 registered members. The choir is comprised of people of all musical abilities, from professional singers and instrumentalists to those who have done very little to no singing.
What opportunities does the Cathedral Choir offer?
The most important thing we do is to lead worship on Sunday mornings and for special events such as the conference Ordination service, Holy Week services, and Christmas Eve services. We generally present 4 special concerts each year – the opening concert of our Religious Arts Festival, our Patriotic concert, the Best Of…concert in August, and our Festival of Christmas concert. Three of the four are performed with a professional orchestra. We have sung some of the finest music ever written for the church including works by Mozart, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Faure, Rutter and others.
Each year we welcome a college student to be a part of our program as they prepare for service in the church. These students become “assistant” directors during the course of their stay. One intern recently stated: “I learned more in the music program in one year than I did in my 4 years of college”.
You will find a wonderful sense of fun, frivolity and fellowship in the Cathedral Choir. We provide frequent social events such as the Music Appreciation Banquet and our annual Thanksgiving Potluck and Rehearsal. The Cathedral choir is made up of talented, loving singers looking for a place to praise their God and share their God-given talents.
The Adult Ensemble, a group of twenty four select singers, formed in September 1995, to offer singers the opportunity to participate in a chamber choir setting and ensemble.
In addition to regular participation in worship services, the group sings Choral Evensong Services, and other special worship and concert events. The group presented a staged, costumed version of the Christmas opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, served as a demonstration choir at a Regional AGO Convention, and has sung for the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
A highlight for the group was the invitation to sing the prelude preceding the 11:00 a.m. Eucharist at Washington National Cathedral, Washington D.C. As a choral ensemble, they are frequently called on to sing for weddings, Christmas tree lightings and other community events.
There are two adult handbell choirs, the Cathedral Bell Choir is a ladies group that meets at noon during the week. The Allegro Choir is a mixed adult bell that meets at 5:45 on Tuesday nights. Both groups play in worship services, as well as in schools and out in the community. Rehearsals begin in September and end in early May.
