Psalm 66:1-4

“Our Joy”

Shout with Joy to God, all the earth!  Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious!  Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!  So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you.  All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing praise to your name.”

Joy to the World, the Lord has Come!  Let earth receive her king.  I love these words of the old familiar hymn which express so well the true meaning of Christmas.

My favorite Advent tradition is attending the Christmas Eve service with family and friends.   A sense of excitement fills the sanctuary as we anticipate the coming of the Christ Child.  I think of the first Christmas Eve when the shepherds keeping watch over their flocks received the good news of the birth of our Savior.  The angel said to them: “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”

Joy is the gentle assurance that God is in control of all of the details of our lives.  He rules the world with truth and grace.  This quiet confidence is the greatest gift we can receive.

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord, let us sing Joy to the World, the Savior Reigns!
